A Look at LAVIV, by Dr. Coyle S. Connolly

Approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2011, LAVIV improves the looks of one’s smile. Unique among injectables, LAVIV focuses on smile lines and comes from one’s own body. This therapy works by using skin samples from the patient to produce fibroblast cells, which create collagen and improve the look and strength of the skin.

To create LAVIV, doctors obtain skin samples from behind the patient’s ear and send them to Fibrocell Science, Inc. The company’s facility then grows millions of fibroblast cells from the few samples, performs quality control, and cryopreserves them until they are ready to be used. This entire process takes around three months, at which point the patient can return to the doctor for the procedure. Receiving LAVIV requires three injections set three to six weeks apart.
